How should I maintain fire safety when on vacation?

  • Summers are almost over but that doesn’t mean that you can’t go on a vacation for a couple of days to have some downtime. Planning for a vacation can be a daunting task and what’s more challenging than to ensure the safety of your home when you are away.

From preventing robberies to fire accidents, everything has to be taken into account but rest assured, here we share few vital tips to put your mind at ease so you can enjoy your vacation.

    Get Your Home Vacation-Ready!

Once you have finalized your vacation itinerary, it is time to get your home vacation-ready. It can be a bit sad when you say goodbye to your home for a few days but if you have made the necessary arrangements to ensure its safety, you will have your peace of mind!

Before you leave for your vacation, contact your local fire protection services company and make sure your fire safety equipment such as the smoke detectors are fully tested and in working order. Also let them know that you will be out of town for a few days. Make sure you check all the stoves and ovens on the day of your departure and ensure that they are switched off.

All electrical appliances should be turned off and most importantly, turn on your smoke alarm system and your security system before you lock your doors.

Home Away from Home and Your Safety!

Once you have reached your destination safely and checked-in your hotel or B&B, it is time to get in action as far as your safety is concerned. Always look for a hotel which has a proper smoke and fire alarm system installed. Make sure the room that you stay in has water sprinklers and a smoke detector installed in it.

Most of the hotels have a fire evacuation plan pasted on the back side of every room door. If it is not pasted, then request for a fire evacuation plan so that you know the nearest safety exit. Always be aware of your surroundings, know the exact location of your room and specifically how far it is from the nearest fire exit.

If you are sharing your room with your children, make sure they know how to open the door in case of a fire emergency and always keep your cell phone and your room key on your bed-side table for quick and easy access. If you hear the alarm ringing in your hotel, don’t panic and stay calm. Feel the door knob with the back of your hand to feel if it’s hot. If it’s cold, exit immediately.

    Don’t Play with Fire!

Who doesn’t love a romantic getaway to break the monotony of everyday life, even if it’s for a day or two? Though most hotel rooms have smoke alarms and water sprinklers, you might just get away with lighting a few candles and burning incense to create a romantic ambiance.

However, playing with fire can have lethal consequences if you are not careful. If you are lighting candles, always ensure that you are doing it safely and away from combustibles like bed linen and curtains. Make sure that you turn them off before going to sleep.

Don’t Try to be the Hero

You don’t have to be a hero if you are on a vacation and there is fire in your room. All you need to do is to quickly exit the room, close the door to contain the fire and notify the local fire protection servicesby activating the fire alarm system. Always use the stairs in case of a fire.
